Arrivals for the Royal Garden Party at Marlborough House, 1881. 'On Thursday week, one of the warmest of summer days in London, their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales gave a party at Marlborough House...[a mansion on The Mall in St James's, City of Westminster. Our engraving shows] the arrival of some of the illustrious guests'. Marlborough House was built in 1711 for Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, the favourite and confidante of Queen Anne. For over a century it served as the London residence of the dukes of Marlborough. Now a Grade I listed building, it is the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Nations and the seat of the Commonwealth Secretariat. It is adjacent to St James's Palace.
