The Civil War in Spain: Carlist trench, San Pedro de Abanto, 1874. View showing '...a portion of the Carlist trenches at San Pedro de Abanto, the centre of their lines. It was abandoned, at three o'clock in the morning, on the 1st May. A female wine-seller, or cantinière, went down to Murietta and announced their flight. The church and village of Abanto were found in ruins. The parapets of the intrenchments had been knocked to pieces by the cannonade. Serrano that day entered the village, and signed a Government decree before the altar in the church'. From "Illustrated London News", 1874.
