"Othello and Desdemona," by W. S. Herrick, 1874. 'The picture which we have engraved was in the last exhibition at the Royal Academy, and in the catalogue are quoted, in connection with the title of the picture, the words of Othello, "My life upon her faith," which serve to recall the exact moment of the tragedy here rendered so sympathetically...It will be remembered that the Moor is commanded by the Duke of Venice to immediately undertake the defence of Cyprus against the Turks or "Ottomites;" that he is to start that very night; and that it has been arranged between Othello and Desdemona that she shall follow the fortunes of her lord as soon as possible. Othello is now leaving the council chamber, where he has made his noble apology for having wedded Desdemona, and he has even somewhat pacified her father, though the querulous parent cannot refrain from casting a parting reproach at his undutiful daughter...We have only to add that Mr. Herrick's picture, which has the merits of grace and nobleness of expression in a high degree, is now in the exhibition at Glasgow'.
