'The subjects of [our artist's] sketches presented this week are some figures and incidents characteristic of the West African negro races, both at Sierra Leone and on the Gold Coast...The scene of household muddle inside a native cottage is not pleasant to look at; but some domestic interiors in the British Islands are almost as bad in dirt and disorder, with the additional miseries of cold and hunger, which the negro family are spared by the bounteous tropical climate'.
