Governor Maxwell returns to Cape Coast Castle, from Cumasia [ie Kumasi], late 19th century. Scene during the English expedition against the Ashantis. In 1895, William Maxwell (1846-1897) was promoted to the governorship of the Gold Coast (now Ghana). Under his governorship the British declared war on the Asante Empire, the fourth Anglo-Ashanti War, known as the "Second Ashanti Expedition". (Colorised black and white print).
