The Rape of Europa, 1628-1629. In Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician princess who was abducted by Zeus in the form of a bull. The Latin term raptio (in archaic or literary English rendered as rape) can mean "taking", as in the large-scale abduction of women: kidnapping for marriage, concubinage or sexual slavery. Copy after an original by Titian. Prado Museum, Madrid, Spain.
