Adam Rudolf von Schönberg was an officer of the Saxon court 1745-1795; Postmaster of the Saxon Electorate; knight of the Order of St John of Jerusalem; rebuilder of the Hospital of St John at Sayda in Saxony. He wears three Maltese crosses: one on the front of the shoulder of his cloak, the second on a brooch, in which the cross is surmounted by a crown, and the third on a chain, in which the Maltese cross alternates with other motifs. A fourth Maltese cross appears in a decoration lying on a red rug, right: the cross bears around the extremities the letters RESTITUTOR and in the centre the letters CS surmounted by a crown. In the background of the painting is shown a view of his house at Reichstädt, Saxony
