Abandonment of the "Resolute" and "Intrepid", May 15th 1854, (1857). Timbers from the Resolute were later used to construct the Resolute desk which was presented to the President of the United States, It was made in 1880 and is still in use in the White House Oval Office. Page 464 of "The eventful voyage of H.M. Discovery Ship 'Resolute' to the Arctic Regions in search of Sir J. Franklin. ... To which is added an account of her being fallen in with by an American Whaler after her abandonment ... and of her presentation to Queen Victoria by the Government of the United States".
