A view of the courtyard of a boiling house, in Antigua, 1823. Enslaved people bringing sugar cane to be processed. Because the cane deteriorated quickly, it had to be processed as speedily as possible. Working conditions were hot and dangerous. From "Ten Views in the Island of Antigua, in which are represented the process of sugar making, and the employment of the negroes...From drawings made by W. Clark, etc".
