Sir Walter Raleigh, c1600, (1834-1837). Raleigh (c1552-1618) English gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, Elizabethan courtier, spy and explorer instrumental in colonisation of North America. He popularised tobacco and was executed in 1618 for violating the 1604 peace treaty with Spain.
