Leonard's wife, the novelist Virginia Woolf, had written with directions on how to get to their house, but Leonard advises Strachey to ignore these: 'Dear James, I don't think you'll understand V's way. Neglect it and follow my plan above. L. W.' James Strachey was the younger brother of Lytton Strachey, a member of the Bloomsbury Group, to which Virginia and Leonard also belonged.
