Expedition of the English and the French to Barbary (North Africa), 15th century. Thousands of Christian soldiers and pilgrims left the ports of France and Italy for Antioch, Tripoli or Acre, and this traffic brought a fortune to shipowners, stimulating Mediterranean ship design to move away from the oared galley to the rounder sailing cog with raised decks. From Chroniques, Vol. IV, part 1 (the 'Harley Froissart'). (Froissart's Chronicles).
