The Astolabe caught in an icefield on its voyage of exploration to the Pacific Islands, 9 February 1838. 'L'Astrolabe arretee par un glacon avant sa sortie de la Banquise, 9 Fevrier 1838, Parages Antarctiques'. (The Astrolabe stopped by an iceberg before leaving the pack ice, Antarctica). The crew of the Astrolabe, under the command of Captain Dumont d'Urville, work frantically to free the ship. It took five days to break free from the ice-filled lake. During the process a number of the crew suffered from frostbite.
