Cannon and equipment, late 15th century. Early cannons were extremely dangerous to their operators, they were inaccurate and liable to explode. However as technology improved, cannon and other methods of using gunpowder gradually took over from traditional medieval weapons such as crossbows and trebuchets, and combat became more impersonal and mechanical.
