John Stainer, organist of St Paul's Cathedral, 1878. After having previously been organist at St Michael's College, Tenbury, and Oxford University, Stainer became organist at St Paul's in 1872. He made reforms to the musical service there, including an increase in the number of musicians and expansion of the repertory. He was an eminent church musician, scholar and composer, helping to found the Musical Association, and becoming professor of music at Oxford. Stainer's services and anthems were fashionable during his lifetime and his hymn tunes are still used today. His oratorio 'The Crucifixion', composed in 1887, is one of his best-known works. He was knighted in 1888.
