List of purchases of slaves by the ship Mangovo George, West Africa, 1785. In 1785, the tiny Liverpool ship Mangovo George, took a cargo of about 1800 items, such as cotton and chintz fabric, guns and gunpowder, swords and cutlasses, silver spoons and brandy, to the west coast of Africa, then sailed down the coast, exchanging these goods for enslaved people. Much of the wealth of 18th century Britain was based on this trade, but public opinion turned increasingly against it, leading to the outlawing in 1807 of slave transportation on British ships and of their import into British colonies.
