Orwell's anti-totalitarian books, "Animal Farm" and "Nineteen-Eighty-Four", were hugely influential among dissident movements in the Soviet bloc during the Cold War.Translations such as this were passed around in unofficial typed or handwritten copies, even though the penalty for their possession could be a prison sentence.
