Lawrence of Arabia, (c1920?). British Army officer, archaeologist, diplomat and writer started assuming Arab dress and eating Arab food before the First World War while he was working on the British Museum expedition excavating the Hittite city of Carchemish. These years were, Lawrence afterwards said, 'the best life I ever lived'.
