Lord Clive and the Nawab of Bengal, 1773. Lord Clive receiving from Siraj Ud Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, the grant of a sum of money. In 1756 the Nawab had taken the city of Calcutta. In 1757 at the Battle of Plassey, Clive and British troops secured Bengal under the control of the East India Company, and therefore British rule. Lord Clive was rewarded with an annual salary of £30,000, and the sum of £234,000.
