Portraits of known Indian thugs, c1851-c1857. At top left is 'Doorga (or Durga) Daleet, a Jamadar of Thugs', and at top right 'Chabida Amaun, a noted Thug leader'. They are portrayed with swords and daggers. Below is Durga-dalad, smoking a pipe, with supporters in attendance. Historically a thug was a member of a religious organisation of robbers and murderers in India.
