Andrew Hofer, 1820. Carrying a sword, and with his initials on his belt. A traditional Tyrolean house is in the distance. Hofer was an Austrian political leader, who in April 1809 led the Tyrol Rebellion. In August the Tyroleans defeated the Bavarians in the third Battle of Mount Isel. The following day Hofer became leader of the government of Tyrol. However due to Austria signing the Peace of Schoenbrunn with Napoleon, the Tyrol had to be given up. Hofer did not give up without a fight, but during the 4th Battle of Mount Isel the Tyrolians were defeated. Hofer had to flee, but was betrayed, arrested and carried off to Mantua, Italy, where he was executed on February 20th 1810.
