Vincent de Beauvais writing in his study, late 15th century. Dominican priest Vincent de Beauvais is seated at his desk, with a large magnifying glass beside him. He attempted to record the thinking of his day on such subjects as theology, psychology, astronomy, medicine, agriculture and botany, to name but a few. In the background, books are placed on sloping shelves. Borders of foliate decoration, with the arms of King Edward IV, for whom the manuscript was produced. From Speculum Historiale, Book 1.
