Aeneas welcomed at Carthage by Dido, c1497-c1499. Aeneas kneels before Queen Dido at the gates to the city of Carthage. Dido was finishing building the city of Carthage when Aeneas and his soldiers arrived. She and Aeneas instantly fall in love. In the background is the ruined city of Troy, from where Aeneas has come, and the Trojan fleet. From Virgil's "Aeneid".
