It is a fine example of English ecclesiastical architecture. The beautiful ruins of Fountains Abbey...are two miles from [Ripon]. The Abbey was founded in 1334...it became one of the wealthiest and proudest of monastic establishments...[at] Wharfedale...is the violent little river Strid, with its steep rocky banks...The ruins of Bolton Abbey Church are associated with Wordsworth's romantic narrative poem, "The White Doe of Rylstone." Barden Tower was a stronghold of the Cliffords...At the sources of the river Aire are Malham Caves and Gordale Scar, the picturesque scenery of which is beheld with astonishment by the tourist. The limestone cliffs of Gordale are 300 ft. high, and overhang their base as much as 30 ft....the stream forms a series of waterfalls, cutting its way deep through opposing ledges of rock'.
