"Master Tom," by J. Durham, A.R.A., 1873. One of two statues of children '...in the late Exhibition of the Royal Academy. They are pleasing examples of the skill with which Mr. Durham, A.R.A., treats modern, domestic, and child-life "motives," in accordance with strict sculpturesque requirements. "Master Tom" and "Miss Ellie" are doubtless portrait works, and where is the pater or mater familias who would not like to have the memory of his or her infant offspring perpetuated in such a way? The bits of sea-weed and shells are apologies for the nude treatment - if, indeed, any apology could be needed for the nudity of such innocent cherubs'. From "Illustrated London News", 1873.
