Pinocchio with Harlequin and Pulcinella, 1911. Illustration from "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi, first published 1883. Pinocchio was carved by a poor Italian carpenter named Geppetto. He is created as a wooden puppet, but dreams of becoming a real boy. The name Pinocchio is possibly derived from the rare Tuscan form pinocchio ('pine nut') or constructed from pino ('pine tree, pine wood') and occhio ('eye'). Private Collection.
