Parliamentary Sketches: in the Lobby - the Guardian of the Constitution, 1880. 'Stately in walk, erect, and solemn in demeanour, there is, however, one hon. member who never, or hardly ever, unbends even in the Lobby. The familiar figure of Mr. Charles N. Newdegate, as he stands regarding the orders of the day, cannot fail to be recognised. Punctilious in his respect for the forms of the House, and generally esteemed for unflinching uprightness and honesty of purpose, the hon. member for North Warwickshire may with reason be called "The Guardian of the Constitution".' From "Illustrated London News", 1880.
