'One of the eminent Quaker family of Pease, of Darlington; son of Mr. Joseph Whitwell Pease, M.P. for South Durham, and grandson of late Joseph Pease, M.P. Was born in 1837; educated at Grove House, Tottenham. In business as colliery owner, ironmaster, and woollen manufacturer. Was Mayor of Darlington, 1873'. (Pease served as member of the Royal Commission on Opium in India from 1893 to 1895). From "Illustrated London News", 1880.
