'Born in London, 1833, son of solicitor's clerk; bred to similar employment; was once Sunday-school teacher; but in 1819 adopted "Secularist" opinions. Enlisted 7th Dragoon Guards, but after two or three years purchased discharge. Became public lecturer, pamphlet-writer, journalist, and publisher, advocating speculative Atheism and Republicanism.
