Sketches at the Liverpool Election: a ward meeting, 1880. 'The Overture; The Burials Bill; On & T.C.; Home Rule; Chairman; Lord and Lady Ramsay; The Irrepressible; On the Platform...The contest for the Parliamentary representation of Liverpool, between Lord Ramsay, the Liberal candidate, and Mr. Edward Whitley, a local Conservative candidate, has excited great interest...[At] the Ward Meeting of Lord Ramsay's supporters...the chairman was Dr. Gee, a medical practitioner, whose portrait...occupies the centre. At the railing...in the act of speaking...is Dr. Cummins, a member of the Irish Home-Rule party...Another speaking figure is that of a leading Dissenter, who has something to say about the Burials Bill. Lord Ramsay...[and] his wife...appear together at the stair railing...Among the other figures on this page, that of Mr. William Simpson, a very energetic and somewhat eccentric local politician...appears at the lower left. An ex-Town Councillor may also be recognised near the top... in the right-hand upper corner, is a youth playing the concertina, by way of an "overture," before the regular proceedings began'.
