Posthumous Portrait of William IV (1711-1751). Prince of Orange-Nassau, died at the age of forty. This portrait was painted shortly after by Aved, a French painter who lived in The Hague for a time. Aved has given the prince the air of a ruler, with a proud stance and gleaming breastplate. He gave him an oar by way of commander’s staff. The ships in the background complete the scene: the prince as ruler of the seas.
