The arrest in 2009 of 59-year-old African-American literary critic, professor and historian Henry Louis Gates attracted national attention after U.S. President Barack Obama declared that the Cambridge police "acted stupidly". Standard police-issued chain style handcuffs. The handcuffs are made of nickel and consist of two locking bracelets linked by a short chain. Embossed on the base of each bracelet is [HIATTS / MADE IN / ENGLAND]. Etched on the side of each bracelet is [CROWLEY].
