Fight for the Standard, Battle of Isly, 1844. Scene from the Franco-Moroccan War: '...a death-struggle between an Arab standard-bearer and a French soldier. The flag, which...is striped with three horizontal bands, one of light yellow, and two of light red, and variously embellished with inscriptions from the Koran, is, we believe, a curiosity in this country; and perhaps the Arab sword may be deemed, for the beauty of its shape, to be worthy of imitation. The Arab cap is a doubled kerchief, bound round the temples with a fillet of coloured thread'. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V.
