Young Woman Wringing Her Hands over a Man's Naked Body (verso), 1796-97. The verso side of this sheet illustrates the decisive moment in the life of Saint Margaret of Cortona (1247-1297), the daughter of an Italian peasant and the mistress of a nobleman. Following a lovers’ rendezvous, Margaret’s paramour is murdered. His faithful dog leads her to its master, prompting her conversion and entrance into a Franciscan convent.
