Portrait of a Mother and Daughter, c. 1794-95. Though flowing loose and free across her shoulders, the woman’s hair is partly bound up in a red kerchief, a tell-tale sign she is an active participant in the French Revolution. The painting also celebrates primary values of the Revolutionary period--close family bonds and, especially, the mother’s role in raising children--by depicting an intimate connection between mother and daughter.
