Landscape with a Road to a Castle on an Island in a River, 1554. Hanns Lautensack was born in Bamberg, but fled to Nuremberg with his family in 1527 to escape religious persecution. Although he is referred to as a painter in various documents, no examples survive. He made 16 small landscape etchings in 1553 and 1554. Like Altdorfer and Hirschvogel, Lautensack depicted inhabited, mountainous views reminiscent of the German countryside with details such as huge pine trees with dripping branches, calm rivers, and castles perched on rock outcrops.
