Cloth with Floral and Vegetal Patterns, 1560-1600. The artistic creativity and technical fineness achieved by expert needlewomen are illustrated by this spectacular cover with richly varied needle lace and cutwork decoration with a bobbin lace border. Around 1600, needle and bobbin lace began to serve similar decorative purposes, although they developed from different sources. Needle lace used in cutwork grew out of white embroidery while bobbin lace was closely linked to braiding.
