Apparel from a Dalmatic, early 1500s. This lavishly enriched embroidery, known as an apparel, is part of a set that originally embellished either side of a dalmatic. Gold and silver thread form the striking strap work, blossoms, and leaves, which would have sparkled in low light levels. Some are worked in straight lines, others in curved contours, while still others create textured basket-weave effects.
