Theatre Royal, Grey Street, Grainger Town, Newcastle Upon Tyne, c1955-c1980. An interior view of the Theatre Royal, showing three tiers of balconies and boxes on the right, with the stalls beneath. The theatre dates from 1837, and was designed for Richard Grainger by John and Benjamin Green. The interior was remodelled in 1901 by Frank Matcham, with rich ornamental design, including ornamental plasterwork on the balcony balustrades, with masked busts on the lowest balustrade.
