'Mina Moiseyev', 1882, (1939). A Russian peasant painted from life. Ivan Kramskoy (1837-1887) initiated the 'revolt of fourteen' at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts, a reaction against academic art which led to the expulsion of a group of graduates who went on to establish the Artel of Artists, an artists' cooperative commune.
