Remains of Fort Charles, Salcombe, Devon, 2014. Originally known as Salcombe Castle, this was an artillery fort built during the reign of King Henry VIII to defend the Kingsbridge Estuary against Spanish and French pirates. Stengthened in the 1640s and renamed in honour of King Charles I, the fort held out against Parliamentarian forces in the English Civil War until May 1646, when it was the last Royalist strongold to surrender. It was slighted after the Civil war by order of Parliament.
