Cobbie Rows Castle, c1145, Isle of Wyre, Orkney, Scotland, 20th century. Dating from Norse occupation, remains of the oldest medieval castle known to exist in Scotland. Built in 1145, by Kolbein Hruga. King Haakon's saga, mentions after the last Norse Earl of Orkney, Earl John, was murdered in Thurso, his killers fled to Wyre. They took refuge in the castle, which was so strong that the besiegers had to thrash out a deal with them to get them out.
