Pilkington Special Hospital, Borough Road, St Helens, Lancashire, September 1918. Looking towards the lower end of the hall for mechano-therapy at Pilkington Special Hospital, showing appliances of French design and manufacture used for ankle and foot exercises. The Pilkington Special Orthopaedic Hospital was conceived by surgeon James R Kerr along with Pilkington Brothers, glass manufacturers. It was established in 1916 for the treatment and rehabilitation of servicemen disabled during the First World War.
