General Daniel Sickles, born in New York in 1825, became a general during the war of secession (American Civil War), and was appointed ambassador to The United States in Madrid in 1869. He asked the Spanish goverment to recognize the independence of Cuba, to abolish slavery and to ensure Cuba's independence. He was Congressman in 1892.
