Monument to Charles XII, gardens behind the Royal Opera House, Stockholm, Sweden, c1923. Charles (Karl) XII (1682-1718) was King of Sweden from 1697. Charles lived in exile in the Ottoman city of Bender (Tighina) after his disastrous defeat by the Russians at the Battle of Poltava in 1709. He returned home to Sweden in 1713 but was killed during an invasion of Norway in 1718. A print from Countries of the World, Volume VI, edited by JA Hammerton, The Fleetway House, London, c1923.
