Interior of an East End synagogue during a festival, London, 20th century. The main body of the synagogue is reserved strictly for men, and women are kept apart in the gallery. In the foreground the elders and important members of congregation are seated, while behind them stand the Priest and the Reader with his copy of the Jewish Law, the Torah. Towards the top right-hand corner are the two scrolls of the Law, wrapped in richly ornamented drapery.
