The Palace of Charles V, Alhambra, Granada, Spain, 2007. The Palace of Carlos V is a Renacentist construction, located on the top of the hill of the Assabica, inside the Nasrid fortification of the Alhambra. It was commanded by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, who wished to establish his residence close to the Alhambra palaces. The project was given to architect Pedro Machuca who built a palace corresponding stylistically to Mannerism, a mode still in its infancy in Italy. The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex of the Moorish rulers of Granada in southern Spain, occupying a hilly terrace on the southeastern border of the city of Granada. Once the residence of the Muslim rulers of Granada and their court, the Alhambra is now one of Spain's major tourist attractions exhibiting the country's most famous Islamic architecture, together with Christian 16th century and later interventions in buildings and gardens that marked its image as it can be seen today. Alhambra was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.
