James II, King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1685, (1932). The second surviving son of King Charles I, James (1633-1701) became king on the death of his brother, Charles II. A Catholic, he lost the throne in 1688 to the Protestant William of Orange in what came to be known as the 'Glorious Revolution'. From Kings and Queens by Eleanor and Herbert Farjeon, 1932.
