Francois Guizot, French historian, orator and statesman, c1845-1874. Guizot (1787-1874) was an influential figure in French politics before the Revolution of 1848. He was a prominent opponent of the reactionary government of King Charles X prior to his overthrow in 1830. Under Charles' successor, Louis Philippe, Guizot held several important government posts before becoming Prime Minister in 1847. In January 1848 he banned opposition political meetings, providing the catalyst for the revolution. Guizot resigned as Prime Minister on 23rd February and never returned to political life.
