Charles Mangin, French soldier, 1918. Mangin was a general in the French Army during the First World War. Nicknamed the Butcher by his troops, he was a supporter of the strategy of General Robert Nivelle, which led to enormous casualties during the Nivelle Offensive of 1917 and the widespread mutinies that followed it. Removed from command, he was later recalled and commanded the 10th Army which played a vital role in stopping the German advance and launching the Allied counter-attack at the Second Battle of the Marne in July-August 1918.
